[영어] Until과 By의 차이 연습

오늘은 간만에 영어 문제 하나 풀어 볼까요?

Until과 By의 차이가 뭔지 좀 많이 헷갈리는 부분인데요.

 

두 단어 모두 ~까지 라는 의미로 사용을 하는데요.

차이는 아래와 같습니다.

 

1. Until

의미: 특정 시점까지 지속됨을 나타냅니다.

 

행동이나 상태가 특정 시간까지 계속된다는 것을 강조합니다.

 

용법:주로 동작이나 상태의 지속을 나타내는 동사와 함께 사용됩니다.

끝나는 시점까지의 기간을 포괄합니다.

 

예문을 보면

She stayed at the party until midnight.

(그녀는 자정까지 파티에 머물렀다.)

→ 자정까지 계속 머무름.

 

Wait here until I come back.

(내가 돌아올 때까지 여기서 기다려.)

→ 돌아올 때까지 기다리는 상태가 지속됨.

 

2. By

의미: 특정 시점 이전에 완료되어야 함을 나타냅니다.

특정 시간 마감이나 데드라인을 강조합니다.

 

용법: 주로 완료나 결과를 나타내는 동사와 함께 사용됩니다.

해당 시점까지 동작이 끝나는 것이 중요합니다.

 

예문을 살펴 보면

Please finish the report by Friday.

(금요일까지 보고서를 끝내 주세요.)

→ 금요일 이전이나 금요일에 끝내야 함.

I need to leave by 7 a.m.

(나는 오전 7시까지 떠나야 한다.)

→ 7시 전에 떠나야 함.
